In 2019, the Governor of Georgia signed Senate Bill 48 into law, which focuses on identifying and supporting students with dyslexia. Dyslexia, as defined by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), is a specific learning disability with a neurobiological origin. Difficulties in accurate and fluent word recognition and poor spelling and decoding abilities characterize dyslexia. Research has shown that early detection of students at risk of dyslexia may not need special education services. Our goal is to identify students with dyslexia characteristics and provide them with necessary support as early as possible to ensure they attain and maintain grade-level standards. Starting from the 2024-2025 academic year, DCSS educators will administer universal screeners to all K-3 students to identify those needing additional support. Suppose the universal screener results indicate reading difficulties or characteristics of dyslexia. In that case, students will follow the MTSS process, providing targeted instruction and interventions to address their areas of concern. Data will be reviewed frequently to assess student progress and the effectiveness of targeted interventions. If subsequent assessments are necessary, we will request written permission from parents or guardians to obtain more in-depth information about their child's reading abilities and potential risk of dyslexia. However, it is essential to note that the results of these assessments are not intended or designed to diagnose dyslexia. The primary purpose is to identify children experiencing reading difficulties or who have characteristics of dyslexia who may need extra support and provide targeted support tailored to their specific needs. Don't hesitate to contact the MTSS coordinator with additional questions or concerns.
